Sergei says goodbye to the NHL, and site news

After a Hall of Fame career, the rumors have come true and Fedorov has signed with a team in Russia.

Here's the question: should the Wings retire his jersey? I'll have some thoughts on that and my Fedorov memories in a post over the weekend.

-Live blogging the NBA draft tonight, and I will have my post game thoughts of the Tigers game (assuming they get the whole game in) at some point tonight.

Here is the lineup today:

Granderson cf
Santiago 2b
Cabrera 1b
Thames dh
Raburn lf
Inge 3b
Ordonez rf
Ryan c
Everett ss

Polanco and Laird are getting the day off. No surprises there. More than anything else we will see today, Galaragga's performance is going to be key. Another sub-par start from him today and he may be out of the rotation. This is a big game for him. Make no mistake about it.

Always an interesting debate. I don't think Sergei should get his jersey retired. I'm no longer bitter towards him, really was only bitter the year after he left. But he just didn't have that kind of impact. I think Shanahan had a bigger impact but I don' think he'll get his number retired either.

The way he left was a little upsetting, but it was also early. He was great as a Wing and never came close to replicating the numbers he had going before leaving. If he played a few more years with Detroit, I think the chances would be greater. He left right in the middle of his prime. Also, he was part of three Cups but in '98 he held out for half the season, which really sours his dedication to the franchise.

While neither of those things are the worst thing in the world, it's two ticks against a player who played among some of the most selfless, team-first players this franchise has ever had, Yzerman and Lidstrom, who have obviously always been locks for jersey retirement. In addition, there was always that rumor floating around that he was unhappy being the #2 behind Yzerman. While I don't think that was nearly as big of a deal as it was made out to be, the idea of #91 hanging by #19 in the rafters at the Joe in the near future would always be weird to me.

But outside of that first year he was gone, I've always been a huge Sergei fan. It's a bummer that he's bolting to the KHL now because he has a couple seasons left in him and Washington has a good thing going, and he's a big part of it.
